Welcome!

To ARIAS Members...

Welcome! The purpose of this blog is to initiate the ARIAS blog facility and offer occasional news and information to those who choose to visit here. I report general news about ARIAS in the Current News section of the website. I try to put there anything that might be of interest to members as it develops, updating it two or three times a week, on average.

I hope you find this new blogging facility useful by giving you a way to offer your thoughts to other ARIAS members.

I should point out that the idea to create a blog on the ARIAS website came from the Publications Committee after their meeting at the Fall Conference. They deserve the credit for its development.

My sincere thanks to Bill Yankus for quickly putting together a well-organized blog capability for the ARIAS Publications committee

A Scenario for consideration:
• In advance of publishing an article, authors could set up a feedback blog.
• Authors would then encourage immediate reader feedback via this blog.
• The result could be a potentially meaningful dialog for the author; the member posting a comment or question and the entire ARIAS membership. – Please keep in mind that members can read the posts without active participation.

Currently, the hottest news item is that The Honorable Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, will give the keynote address to the 2008 ARIAS Spring Conference at Amelia Island on May 7. Justice Alito will speak in mid-afternoon on the first day of the three-day event.

Beyond having Justice Alito, the conference will include an assortment of mock arbitrations that should be especially interesting and worthwhile. Also, the Ritz-Carlton at Amelia Island is a great place. More to come in the announcement brochure at the end of February.

Unfortunately, this blog does not appear to have a lot of activity. I will however, follow Jim Howley's advice in responding to Frank Lattal's call for more articles for the ARIAS Quarterly. I participated last week as the reinsurer party arbitrator in the mock arbitration that was part of the new ARIAS training series. The key issue was the discovery of "attorney-client privileged" documents as part of a reinsurance arbitration. Since I already did a great deal of research as background for my participation and now have the benefit of the panel discussion on discovery issues, I was thinking of doing a follow-up article that focused on the issue of discovery of attorney-client privileged documents in arbitration. If everyone can suppress a yawn long enough to let me know if this might be useful or to offer suggestions, I would love to hear them.
Thanks!
